Having curated the Performance, Film & Discursivity programs at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam from 2010–15, Hendrik Folkerts shares his experience of working with the spatialization and articulation of performance in the field of visual art. Organized as a field trip, the session takes place in a number of different art contexts in Kassel, which may contrast with or complement each other in terms of the ways in which these spaces are conditioned to display, stage and/or perform the body as a medium in contemporary art. With reference to a number of art-historical texts, we examine how the exhibition space and the theater (as well as everything in between) generate certain “dispositifs” of display and how artists since the 1960s—and particularly since the early 2000s—have crossed the boundaries between them.
