About the project

For documenta 14, Argentinian artist Marta Minujín recreates a public art project in Kassel based on her 1983 installation El Partenón de libros. This time, she plans to develop a version of the iconic Parthenon in Athens to be installed in Kassel.

With El Partenón de libros, Minujín seized upon the Parthenon as an aesthetic and political archetype of democracy, which had been corrupted in her country of Argentina by the civilian-military dictatorship that ruled until 1983, and systematically destroyed subversive culture by banning und burning several hundred thousand books.

Minujín’s idea was to put the democratic ideal back into circulation at the very moment of the demise of the military junta. Within the context of this large-scale, participatory project, thousands of books (taken from cellars where they had been locked up by the military) covered a replica of the Parthenon constructed with metal tubes at the intersection of the two most prestigious avenues of Buenos Aires. After five days of exhibition, two cranes tipped over the Parthenon, and the books were handed out to spectators and representatives of public libraries.

El Partenón de libros will be rebuilt for documenta 14 as The Parthenon of Books, covered with up to 100,000 books from all over the world which are now in legal circulation again after years of prohibition, or are allowed in some countries and prohibited elsewhere. We kindly ask you to help us realize The Parthenon of Books by donating books of this kind.
